We are extremely pleased to announce that the Pacific University Libraries have joined the Open Library of Humanities’ Library Partnership Subsidy system. Pacific University (Forest Grove, Oregon) offers a unique combination of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in the liberal arts and sciences, education, business, optometry, and the health professions. The University traces its roots to Tualatin Academy, chartered in Forest Grove in 1849 by Congregational pioneers. In 1854, a new charter was granted to the trustees of Tualatin Academy for both the academy and Pacific University. Today, Pacific is distinguished by its inquiry-based curricula and interdisciplinary collaboration, offering students exceptional opportunities for experiential learning, leadership, and civic engagement.
The Open Library of Humanities is an academic-led, gold open-access publisher with no author-facing charges. With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the platform covers its costs by payments from an international library consortium, rather than any kind of author fee.
Dr. Martin Paul Eve, a founder and academic project director of the OLH, welcomed Pacific: “I am delighted that Pacific University has joined the OLH model. Institutions of all shapes and sizes benefit from open access to research in the humanities. With the help of institutions like Pacific, we will expand the OLH model to deliver the best value and opportunity to all.”
Isaac Gilman, Scholarly Communication & Publishing Services Librarian and Associate Director of the Pacific University Press, added: “Through its financial and governance models, OLH recognizes that scholarly publishing is fundamentally a communal endeavour—that every academic institution shares a responsibility to help their (and others’) scholars and researchers publish their work. The Pacific University Libraries welcome the opportunity to support authors and expand the availability of humanities scholarship.”
Journals wishing to join the platform should submit an initial enquiry to email@example.com. After the September launch of the OLH, applications will be be subject to the platform's joining procedure.
