We are extremely pleased to announce that Gustavus Adolphus College has joined the Open Library of Humanities’ Library Partnership Subsidy system. Gustavus Adolphus College is a highly selective, private, coeducational, residential liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Founded in 1862, it has valued its Lutheran and Swedish heritages throughout its history. The college is guided by five core values: community, excellence, faith, justice, and service.
The Open Library of Humanities is an academic-led, gold open-access publisher with no author-facing charges. With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the platform covers its costs by payments from an international library consortium, rather than any kind of author fee.
Dr. Martin Paul Eve, a founder and academic project director of the OLH, welcomed Gustavus Adolphus College: “I am delighted that Gustavus Adolphus College has joined the OLH model. Gustavus Adolphus College shines in the international scholarly communication sphere through the prominent profile of its library faculty. That we can work with Gustavus Adolphus College to create a new model for equitable, sustainable and scalable open access in the humanities is, therefore, an honour and a privilege.”
Professor Barbara Fister added: “Our library is a relatively small one, but we think its most important work is to prepare our student to be ready to make sense of the world into which they will graduate and be prepared to make it better. It makes no sense for them to learn about how knowledge works only to have them excluded from the resources they have relied on as soon as they graduate. We’re delighted, in partnership with our John S. Kendall Center for Engaged Learning, to be able to support a project that will make humanities and social sciences research available to our graduates – and to the entire world. It’s time for libraries of all sizes to step up for open access to research.”
Journals wishing to join the platform should submit an initial enquiry to firstname.lastname@example.org. After the September launch of the OLH, applications will be be subject to the platform's joining procedure.
